PSKC Dialysis Technician Classes: Dialysis Technician training is provided to Dialysis Technicians. PSKC covers most of the training cost. New hires will be informed of their class start date.

General Statement of Duties:

The Dialysis Technician provides care for renal dialysis patients, following specific protocols, under the supervision of a Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) Registered Staff Nurse.

Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s degree is preferred.
Certification &Licensure: AIDS/HIV, CPR certificates desired.

Experience:

Medical or technical background relating to patient care or renal environment is desired.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to see and identify colors.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English for the purpose of following written policies and procedures, completion of reports, and communicating with others in the work setting.
  • Technical aptitude to learn dialysis machine and treatment functions.
  • Ability to perform metric system conversions.
  • Ability to work 3 days per week for 13 hour schedules Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.
  • Able to work any shift between 3:30 AM and 11:00 PM, and rotate shifts every four months as assigned.
  • Ability to work at any PSKC facility: Smokey Point, Everett, and Mountlake Terrace, with possible occasional short assignments to Whidbey Island.
  • Able to maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Able to successfully complete initial training and preceptorship, including passing all tests with an 80% score. Independent study requires an average two hours daily during the initial three weeks of training.
  • Must maintain updated Category G Certificates, pass the Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) exam within 18 months of hire, and maintain updated CHT certification.
  • Must provide CPR certificate, or obtain CPR certificate within one month of hire.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and resolve problems in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, patients, and visitors.
  • Approach work requirements in a methodical, conscientious, and timely manner.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Punctual arrival to work on scheduled work day and follow Absence/Call In Policy if unable to work a regularly scheduled workday.
  • Prepare dialysis machine and related equipment for the day’s use, complying with PSKC policies and procedures.
  • Prepare pre-dialysis assessment of the patient for proper treatment.
  • Initiate hemodialysis treatment according to procedure using fistula needles.
  • When performing the technique of venipuncture, identify and communicate problems or complications to the dialysis trained Registered Nurse.
  • Monitor and discontinue dialysis treatment according to procedure.
  • Identify, communicate, and intervene appropriately during hemodialysis crisis situations.
  • Identify the importance of dry weight and significance of weight change in the performance of a hemodialysis treatment and report findings to PSKC Registered Nurse.
  • Understand the principles of dialysis and be able to apply them when using equipment and supplies (Set up dialysis machine, mix solutions, etc.)
  • Use the principles of the aseptic technique appropriately.
  • Identify and correct equipment and technical deficiencies as trained.
  • Use appropriate written and oral communication in the treatment area.
  • Be sensitive to the environmental needs of the patient.
  • Maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new employees and provide exemplary demonstrations of job skill and technique by sharing expertise with the trainee.
  • Participate fully in continuous quality improvement of PSKC delivery processes.
  • Appropriate and safe use of all hazardous chemicals.
  • Perform monthly inventory and maintain appropriate stock levels in assigned areas
