PUGET SOUND KIDNEY CENTERS

The Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) is a privately operated organization centrally located in Snohomish County with facilities in Everett, Mountlake Terrace, Smokey Point, and Whidbey Island. Puget Sound Kidney Centers offers high quality dialysis technology to our patients and we have received the highest QC rating according to Medicare standards. Our treatment program encompasses medical, education and social services for patients and their families.

MEDICAL CLAIMS CLERK – ACCOUNTING

General Statement of Duties: The Medical Claims Clerk is responsible for medical claims collection functions related to Accounts Receivable for the Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC).

Qualifications

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent.  Medical claims and coding experience required.

Experience:

  • Knowledgeable and proficient in double-entry bookkeeping
  • Proficient in computer programs and spreadsheets
  • Knowledgeable in computers
  • Knowledgeable in commercial insurance  and Medicare/Medicaid                                         

                                           
Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employer, employee, and patient records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, family, and staff.

Essential Functions

Accounts Receivable:
  • Ability to perform collection agent functions for all PSKC Accounts Receivable.  
  • Maintain tracking logs for PSKC Accounts Receivable.                   
  • Ability to organize the mailing and filing of invoices as required.                
  • Interact with patients in order to coordinate insurance funding for patients (KDP, physician referrals, etc.) and assist with Social Security Administration (SSA) and Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), and commercial insurance applications.
  • Maintain and update the PSKC patient account database on a continuous basis.
  • Ability to perform and coordinate manual and electronic claims processing and adjustments as required.

 

RENAL DIETITIAN 

General Statement of Duties: The Renal Dietitian's primary responsibility is to provide nutritional advice to assigned Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) patients to promote optimal health. 

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition Science, or equivalent.
Registration: Currently a Registered Dietitian with the American Dietetic Association Commission on Dietetic Registration.              
Experience: Completion of at least one year of professional work experience in clinical nutrition or as a registered dietitian.

Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of diet therapy, and the ability to apply this knowledge to meal planning, recipe modification, and diet education.
  • Solid understanding of lab values with the ability to interpret and relate levels to clinical conditions, diet intake, etc.
  • Ability to teach patients and staff in a positive, non-threatening way.
  • Ability to interact with patients and staff from a variety of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Accurate and concise medical documentation skills.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English for the purpose of following written policies and procedures, completion of reports, and communicating with others in a work setting.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Able to use computers, word-processing, nutrient analysis, and database software, specifically Microsoft Office Suite software, electronic medical records programs.

Essential Functions

  • Counsel pre-dialysis patients referred to PSKC Dietitians by nephrologists in appropriate medical nutrition therapies.
  • Educate assigned new patients on prescribed renal diet.
  • Perform nutritional assessments on all assigned new patients per Departmental Standards of Care.
  • Perform annual nutritional assessments/referrals on all assigned patients per Departmental Standards of Care.
  • Review lab results with assigned patients on monthly basis, and educate regarding appropriate nutrition related changes.
  • Participate in monthly Patient Care Conferences (PCC).
  • Document lab review interventions in PCC notes.  Document other nutrition care in progress notes.
  • Alert physicians of any patient critical lab values.
  • Perform monthly urea kinetic modeling.
  • Provide any additional counseling per request.
  • Monitor need for oral supplements, enteral or parenteral support, and facilitate initiation.
  • Make recommendations regarding nutritional related medications as appropriate.

 

BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST – PART TIME

General Statement of Duties: The Biomedical Technologist is responsible for the repair and maintenance of equipment at all Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) facilities. This position requires working 8 hour shifts for 2-3 days per week.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.  Associate’s degree preferred.

Certification & Licensure: Nationally certified, or certification eligible, in hemodialysis or biomedical technology and CPR, valid Washington State driver’s license, and insurable on the PSKC automobile policy.

Experience:

  • One year prior patient care experience in the hemodialysis field preferred.
  • Prior experience with equipment maintenance and repair in the hemodialysis field preferred.

  • Can identify, assess, and resolve problems in a timely fashion.
  • Can develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, patients, and visitors.
  • Can maintain up-to-date records in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Can use computers and computer controlled equipment.
  • Can understand, interpret, adapt to, apply, and communicate policy and procedural changes.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English for the purpose of following written policies and procedures, completion of reports, and communicating with others in a work setting.
  • Approach work requirements in a methodical, conscientious, and timely manner.
  • Can react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Can maintain quality control standards.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain equipment at all PSKC, Acute Mobile, and Home treatment locations.
  • Perform facility maintenance duties as needed (e.g., light bulb replacement, water heater repair, etc.).
  • Identify, plan, and implement maintenance schedules for equipment at all PSKC work locations.
  • Perform bacteriological studies at all PSKC treatment locations as designated by the Technical Director.
  • Provide training to personnel on the safe and effective use of all equipment used by PSKC.
  • Understand dialysis solutions with the ability to mix and test custom baths.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping for all functions.
  • Standby on-call at times designated by the Director of Technical Services.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new employees.
  • Participate fully in continuous quality improvement of the PSKC service delivery process.
  • Provide hazardous chemical training to the Technical Department staff.
  • Other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as-needed basis.

 

ACUTE MOBILE REGISTERED NURSE

General Statement of Duties: The Acute Mobile Nurse of the Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) is responsible for dialysis care and documentation of dialysis care given to hospital patients.

Qualifications

Education: Evidence of graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Certification & Licensure: Current RN license from the Washington State Board of Nursing.  Eligible for Nephrology Nurse Certification.  Current CPR certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in hemodialysis.
  • Minimum of one year of prior clinical nursing experience, preferably in critical care.
  • Experience in peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work standby on-call for 24 hour periods. May be required to work up to 24 hours when needed.
  • Ability to use every type of dialysis access with ease, understands their functions, and teaches others to analyze and use
  • Ability to implement all modalities of dialysis safely and competently. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply universal safety precautions and infection control procedures.  Skills and attributes sufficient to fulfill the job requirements and essential functions.
  • Able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to respond effectively and appropriately to changing work and health care environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, staff, and medical professionals.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Essential Functions

  • Respond to hospital’s dialysis needs per PSKC’s Mobile Contract.
  • Identify and implement plans to meet acute or chronic patient’s emotional and physical needs in the hospital.
  • Communicate patient status, both physiological and behavioral, to appropriate multi-disciplinary practitioners.
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue the following treatments according to PSKC’s procedures: 
    • Hemodialysis
    • Peritoneal dialysis
    • Hemoperfusion
    • CRRT
  • Provide appropriate intervention during various medical crises.
  • Assess patient’s physical and emotional needs. 
  • Examine and document clinical findings. 
  • Review laboratory data and dialysis orders. 
  • Maintain treatment record sheets with accurate and legible documentation.
  • Ensure that all equipment is in working order and reports changes and repairs as needed.
  • Correctly interpret and execute medical staff orders for treatment in a timely manner. 



STAFF REGISTERED NURSE

General Statement of Duties: The staff registered nurse (RN) is responsible for the provision of quality dialysis care for the Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) patients and its documentation following established PSKC standards and practices and in compliance with the Washington State Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications

Education: Evidence of graduation from an accredited school of nursing.  Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.

Licensure & Certification: Current licensure from the Washington State Board of Nursing. 

Experience: No experience is necessary due to our comprehensive dialysis-training program. 

Skills & Abilities

  • Can maintain consistently strong attendance. Ability to work thirteen (13) hour shifts and maintain productive work habits.Can identify, assess, and resolve problems in a timely fashion.
  • Can develop and maintain effective working relationships with all individuals encountered in the work environment.
  • Can maintain up-to-date records in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Can use a computer.
  • Can understand, adapt to, apply, and communicate policy and procedural changes.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English for the purpose of following written policies and procedures, documentation, and communicating with others in a work setting.
  • Approach work requirements in a consistent, well-organized, and timely manner.
  • Can react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Can maintain quality control standards.
  • Able to be a positive team player.

Other Requirements

  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient, employee and PSKC information.
  • Comply with all PSKC and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintenance of skills must be accomplished by attendance at PSKC in-service educational offerings and approved outside continuing educational opportunities.
  • Successfully complete the PSKC Patient Care Training and Orientation course.
  • Responsible for adherence to employment policies and nursing care policies and practices.
  • Nurse is also responsible to the PSKC patient and the patient's physician for delivery of quality nursing care, as defined by PSKC Officers, Directors, and Department Heads.
  • Must be able to work well with others, and should exhibit:
    • A commitment to dependability.
    • A consistent ability to approach work requirements in a methodical manner.
    • An ability to work through periods of occasional fatigue.

Essential Functions

  • Punctual arrival to work on scheduled workdays.
  • Identify, plan, and implement plan to meet primary patient's dialysis needs.
  • Initiate hemodialysis treatment to assigned patients, according to PSKC procedures, using fistula needles, and central line catheters.
  • Maintain daily clinical records with accurate and legible documentation.
  • Provide primary patient teaching in the areas of:
    • Fluid and electrolyte balances.
    • Dietary restrictions.
    • Laboratory values.
    • Patient medications.
    • Hemodialysis procedures.
  • Monitor and discontinue dialysis treatment according to PSKC procedure.
  • Maintain accurate and current patient treatment care plan.
  • Provide appropriate intervention during an emergency situation.
  • Provide leadership and appropriate supervision to Dialysis Technicians.
  • Provide appropriate intervention during a hemodialysis crisis.
  • Maintain accurate and current patient medication lists on assigned patients.
  • Attend staff meetings and patient care conferences when scheduled.
  • Maintain communication lines between patient and medical team.  Refer patient needs to members of
    medical team as necessary.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new employees.
  • Provide exemplary demonstrations of job skill and technique, by sharing expertise with the trainee;
    encourage thorough acquisition of job skills and knowledge.
