Classes

Being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be overwhelming for you, your family and your friends. Knowing more about what to expect, what you can do now to slow the progression of kidney disease and what your treatment options are will help you be better prepared.

Puget Sound Kidney Centers is happy to offer several in-person and virtual classes to kidney patients and their friends and family. With virtual classes you can join classes from anywhere, through your computer or smart phone.

Survive and Thrive is a program for people with CKD stages 2-4. This program focuses on healthy lifestyle behaviors to protect and stabilize kidney function. For people with CKD stages 4-5, who will soon start treatment, we offer Healthy Options Classes. Community Classes are for anyone who wants to learn about kidneys, healthy eating or other ways to protect your kidneys. Learn more information about all our classes below.

Survive and Thrive
with CKD

Take charge of your health in a fun and interactive, in-person or virtual, learning environment. This 6-week program is for people with CKD stages 2-4, their family and friends. In weekly classes you will learn about kidneys and what they do, how to promote kidney health with good nutrition and lifestyle changes, how to make a plan for your life and learn about treatment choices.

  • Cost: FREE
  • Classes in series: Six classes
  • Duration: 1.5 hour
  • Days: Wednesday afternoons or evenings

Healthy Options

This 2-week program is for people with CKD stages 4-5, who are preparing for dialysis or transplant. Family and friends are also welcome to sign up. In these in-person or virtual classes you will learn about kidney disease and treatment options, dialysis access choices, healthy eating, living with kidney disease and how to choose a treatment that is right for you.

  • Duration: 1.5 hour
  • Days: Thursday afternoons or evenings

Community Classes

Puget Sound Kidney Centers offers free, one-hour community presentations on kidney health and healthy eating.

Classes include topics about healthy eating, kidney health, plant protein, fitness and exercise, advanced care planning and making healthy changes in your life.

Food for Thought: The Social Side of Eating
Virtual – September 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM PDT.

Eating out can be fun, but it can also be challenging. How do you balance your health, your budget, and your social life? In this presentation, you’ll learn some practical strategies and skills to make the most of your dining experiences, whether it’s a casual lunch with friends, a romantic dinner date, or a family potluck.

Kidney Healthy Living

Taught by a Nephrologist (kidney doctor) and renal dietitian, this class will teach you the basics of how your kidneys function, why they are important, and how you can keep them healthy through nutrition basics.

Simple Meal Makeovers
Virtual – October 17, 2023 at 2:00 PM PDT.

Taught by a Kidney Dietitian, this class will give you ideas on easy swaps that make your favorite foods better for you. Learn to modify recipes without sacrificing flavor!

Cultivating Change
Virtual – November 14, 2023 at 11:00 AM PDT.

Are you ready to make a lifestyle change but unsure where to start? Have you tried to make healthy changes before that didn’t last? If so, this virtual class is for you. This session will teach you the basics of how to make healthy lifestyle changes that last.

Healthy Holiday Makeovers
Virtual – December 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM PDT.

Taught by a Kidney Dietitian, this virtual class will provide you with tips and information on how to eat healthy during holiday festivities and events. Learn how to make small changes that can add up to big health benefits.
