Our Favorite Activities To Do While on Dialysis

For most people on dialysis at a clinic, treatment time is four to five hours—which can seem long and daunting. It’s natural to feel bored, tired, antsy, and irritable during dialysis. One of the best ways to combat these negative feelings is to make a plan before each treatment on how to use your time. Yes, you are in that chair for a long time. But there are plenty of activities you can do to keep yourself entertained, to feel productive, and to walk away after each treatment feeling like you used that time in the best way.

Here are some of our favorite ways to pass the time during dialysis.

Relax and Unwind

  1. Watch TV or movies: Bring a tablet, laptop or your smartphone to watch an episode of your favorite show, or a movie or documentary.
  2. Listen to music or podcasts: Use headphones to listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks.
  3. Read: Bring books, magazines or a newspaper.
  4. Play games: Use a smartphone, tablet or portable gaming device to play games. Or, go old-fashioned and bring a book of sudoku or crossword puzzles to keep your mind alert.
  5. Practice meditation or mindfulness: Practice relaxation techniques, deep breathing, or mindfulness exercises, or close your eyes and try to catch up on sleep. All of these activities can help pass the time and improve mental health.

Learn Something New

  1. Educate yourself: Take online courses or watch educational videos on platforms like YouTube, Udemy or Coursera.
  2. Learn a language: Use apps like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone to try a language you’ve always wanted to learn.
  3. Goal plan: Use a notebook or app to set personal goals or make plans for the future. You could even meal plan, using some of our kidney-friendly recipes!

Connect With Others

  1. Call or video chat: Catch up with friends or family.
  2. Write letters or emails: Everyone loves mail! Connect with friends and family by penning a thoughtful letter or email.

Get Creative

  1. Draw or sketch: Bring a sketchpad and pencils and get creative!
  2. Journal or write: Keep a diary, write stories or work on personal writing projects.
  3. Crafting: Small, portable crafts like knitting or crocheting is a great way to pass the time.

Be Productive

  1. Work remotely: If your job allows it, bring your laptop or tablet to catch-up on emails or other tasks.
  2. Organize finances: Manage your budget—not necessarily the most fun task for a lot of us but one that will help you stay organized and on track, financially-speaking.

Try Simple Exercises

  1. Hand exercises: Simple hand or finger exercises can improve circulation and reduce stiffness.
  2. Stretching (with approval): Perform subtle movements to stretch your legs or arms without disturbing the equipment.

Other Tips for Successful Dialysis Sessions

  • Comfort: Bring a blanket, pillow or other items to stay warm and comfortable during each treatment.
  • Hydration and snacks: Ask your Puget Sound Kidney Centers care team about eating or drinking during dialysis.
  • Pre-approval: Your care team is always there and ready to answer any questions you may have, as well as making sure you are comfortable throughout your treatment. Check in with the team if you need anything at all.

What activities do you like to do during dialysis? Will you be trying any of these?
